Agios Gewrgios Nhleias , Pilio

Agios Georgios Nileias (Greek: Άγιος Γεώργιος Νηλείας) is a Greek village located 20 km east of Volos in the Magnesia prefecture. Agios Georgios Nileias is built amphitheatrically at the elevation of 700 m on the slopes of Pelion. Koropi Agios Georgios Nileias is in the municipality of a Milies. Its population in 2001 was 785 for the municipal district. Agios Georgios Nileias is located between Agios Vlassios and Pinakates.

History

The first inhabitants of the village were foresters, and settled around the 15th century. The Aigiorgeites lived in the village in the summer and in the winter moved down to towns at lower elevations, such as Agia Triada, Ano Gatzea and Kato Gatzea.

The town was a battleground during the Greek War of Independence of 1821, but the town fell into Turkish hands for the next sixty years and the village was burnt. The village and its settlements were freed from the Ottoman and joined the rest of Greece in 1881. The village became a part of the old municipality of Nileias, but this municipality was dissolved in 1914 and downgraded to the communities of Ano and Kato Lechonia, Agios Vlassios (then Karabasi), Agios Georgios, Drakeia, Agios Lavrentios and Agria. It remained an autonomous commune until 1998. Nileia was an ancient city located close to modern Volos.

The village had a excellent lifestyle from the late-19th century up until World War II. Water was plentiful, and had lots of water and rich in production which includes olives and apple. Many fortunes of its village residents left for Egypt and elsewhere.

The village declined after the Second World War and the Greek Civil War. Many residents emigrated to lower elevations. Today, Agios Georgios Nileios has fewer residents, many homes.

Spetses (Modern Greek: Σπέτσες, Ancient/Katharevousa: Σπέτσαι, Spetsai) is an island of Greece, sometimes included as one of the Saronic Islands. Until 1948, it was part of the old prefecture of Argolidocorinthia that is now split into Argolis and Corinthia. In ancient times, it was known as Pityoussa and later as Petses. The town of Spetses (pop. 3,846 in 2001) is the only large settlement on the island and was one of the two only provinces in Greece that has fewer than five settlements and two municipalities. The island is presently an independent municipality (pop. 3,916), with no local boundaries within the municipality. The other settlements on the island are Moní Agíon Pánton (pop. 32), Ligonéri (16), Ágioi Anárgyroi (11), Kouzoúnos (3). Also part of the Municipality of Spetses are the islands of Spetsopoula (pop. 8) and Velopoula (uninhabited).

Petralona's Cave , Chalkidiki

The cave of Petralona "embellished" with stalagmites and stalactites is located in the west foot of the Katsika (Goat) mountain and in an altitude of about 300 meters from the level of sea. It was found in 1959 by the inhabitant of Petralona, Mr. Philippos Hatzaridis and it became well known all over the world in 1960, when the skull of Arhanthropos was found by another inhabitant of Petralona, Mr. Christos Sarrigiannidis.

The systematic excavations of the Cave began in 1965 by the founder of the Anthropologic Company of Greece, anthropologist professor Aris Paulianos. His researches proved that the Arhanthropos is about 700.000 years old, and this makes him the "oldest" European. This age was determined after the detailed analysis of stratigraphy (until today 28 geological layer have been revealed), and after studying the primitive and Paleolithic tools as well as the palaiofauna that were discovered in almost all the layers. Among the fossils of animals that have extinct the following are included: lions, hyenas, bears, panthers, elephants, rhinoceros, megakeroi, bison and various species of deer and hippo, and also 25 species of birds, 16 species of rodents and 17 species of bats.

In order to verify the age, the contribution of nucleonic is very important. The materials that have been dated are bones, argil, stalagmites and ashes. These are fire traces - the oldest ones that human have ever lighted.

Milos island

The rich in minerals volcanic ground and the occupation with the excavation, the treatment and also the sale of these minerals, constituted the first source of wealth for the island and the residents until today.

Many small and big sandy beaches with many colours, marine caves and geomorphological forms of volcanic inspiration are responsible for the explosion of tourism in Milos . The history, the legends and the tradition are met with the extraordinary beauty of the island and they compose an ideal destination of relaxation and pleasure, able to satisfy even the most difficult taste. Leave your dreams free to emerge in the embrace of Venus and become one with the sun and the blue waters of the Aegean.
